Traditionally, the world of wine has always been dominated by men, it’s true that throughout history, the male presence in this universe is more evident. However, it is important to remember, this presence is not unique to men.

The female presence in the world of wines comes from Greek mythology to our times, with the development of a consumer and professional market for women.

The wine market, when globally integrated into advanced and culturally modern societies and economies, needed to adapt to a new era, and women took the opportunity to definitively establish their presence not only as tasters but also as process of the beverage.

The influence of women in wine history

In the 12th century, the Duchess of Aquitaine, Leonor Gillaume, (married to Henry II of England) had a great influence on the success of Bordeaux wines, when she convinced her son Richard the Lionheart to make the region the seat of his throne, giving real glamor, today's famous wine region.

Also, in France, but already in the nineteenth century, the young widow Nicole Barbe CLicquot Ponsardin, known as Veuve Clicquot, developed a procedure that removed yeast lees from bottles of champagne, the technique of remuage, a revolution and an example of pioneering that left an undeniable mark on the history of wine.

"In Portugal, a great port wine produced in the Alto Douro region is elaborated by a house founded by a woman: Dona Antónia Ferreira"

What women prefer

Women are often labeled in a preconceived and restricted way. It has been agreed that they prefer delicate wines with little body, sweet and easy to drink.

Research reveals otherwise, sparkling and whites, lighter and sweeter, they are not their favorites. Women prefer good wines, no matter if they are red, white, full-bodied or light.

With the economic independence of women, the wine market began to consider them more in the definition of strategies of production and marketing.

They are successful professionals when it comes to wine

They managed to run successful wineries and became internationally recognized sommeliers. Unlike the old world, the new world, where the phenomenon of wine is more recent, they are already part of the day to day production of the producers. Enologists and businesswomen who demarcate with intelligence and professionalism their place in the universe of wines.

"According to a survey conducted in England and conducted by Vinexpo, one of the largest wine fairs in the world, eight out of ten bottles are bought by women"
